05 TSX Flashing check engine light

Good evening all. I have a 2005 TSX with 71k miles. Tonight when I was at a stop light all of a sudden the engine started sputtering and the check engine light started flashing. I pulled into a parking lot and checked to oil which was good. I did just get the oil changed about a week ago. I was able to start the car and get it back home however, it was so bad I was not able to go more than 35 mph. After I parked it and got out I noticed a strange smell that was not rotten eggs. If anyone has an idea on what it could be I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Probably an O2 sensor. Fairly common problem on the 04s.

Ya think? I never would have guessed a bad 02 sensor could have that much of an impact on how the car runs, but maybe so. Sounds like bad gas to me, and I'm curious now. Hope we hear what it turns out be (as the owner of an 05).

Thanks folks. I am waiting for the roadside tow truck to take it to my local dealer. When I called this morning and told him the problem, he actually asked when I wanted to bring it in and if I was going to drive it in. Unreal.

update: after getting the run around from acura and roadside assitance only to find out that I'm no longer covered by it. They want 72 bucks to tow it 4 miles. Acura also informed me that an O2 sensor is not covered under the powertrain warrenty. I get the feeling that I made a mistake buying this car with the CPO.

You can borrow a scan tool at Autozone, free. Once you get the code, put it up here. If the code is saying your O2 is faulty, it's a easy DIY. The part however costs about $220 online and it's through an Acura dealer (cheapest I've found). It takes about 30mins to replace...and that's taking your time.

I had it towed to the dealer and am now waiting for them to call me back. The car was undriveable so I would not have made it to autozone. On another note, I find it funny that there is an ad for the new Buick Regal on this page.

I just got a call from the dealer who told me that one of my ignition coils is bad causing a cylinder misfire and that it is not covered under warrenty. He also told me they found a code for the gas cap (which I think is bunk). They want 352.48 parts and labor and they have to order the part (the coil). What I would like to know is how in the hell is the coil not part of the powertrain when the car cannot run with out it??? Also what kind of luxury car company doesen't have weekend hours? This is beyond infuriating!!

Here's some info that may be helpful.
30520-PNC-004 COIL ASSY., PLUG HOLE 2005 TSX $71.53
17670-SDA-A01 CAP, FUEL FILLER 2005 TSX $19.88

Total $91.41 for parts. The replacement of these is easy DIY, but alas if you had time and another form of transportation in the interim.

Just wanted to say thanks! I had the same problem yesterday and, because of this thread, I was able to quickly solve the problem. My 05 TSX had the same symptoms as above. Initial thought was bad gas, but that quickly was ruled out. Then, I thought spark plugs. Installed new NGK Iridiums, but problem was still there. Had it diagnosed and it came back with a bad ignition coil on cylinder #4 (cylinder closest to driver's side; cylinders fire off 1-4 starting from the cylinder closest to the passenger side). That was the reason the car was sensing a misfire and why the check engine light was blinking. Shop wanted $125.00 for the ignition coil and $56.00 for labor. Since I live about 10 minutes from a wealth of used auto parts shops/wreakage yards, I went over to a shop that specialized in Acura parts, bought a used OEM ignition coil for $20, and installed it myself. I feel sooo much better now, but this thread is supremely helpful. If anybody in the future has these same symptoms with an 05 TSX, this is worth checking out.

Wow, a used one? A new one was only $50 more.... Of course I would have not only used new parts, I would have replaced all 4 (if one is bad, can the other's be far behind?). To each their own....

Or you could totally miss the whole point of my post, which was just to say that the original thread was extremely helpful.

On a side note, yeah, unfortunately I'm not a new parts snob. $20 for an local OEM quick fix is an exceedingly easy choice over the alternative.

Also, as to replacing all 4 because 1 was bad. I'm not sure where to start here other than that's just horrible logic because one is not tied to nor dependent on the other(s). But apparently making completely reasonable decisions deserves derision from you. I hope you enjoy the view from up there...
