Mobil1 synthetic is usually the most recommended oil for the enthusiast, but regular oil is fine as well. Do you push your car at all? if so go for the synthetic.

Thank you for your quick answer. How much does it cost extra? I have MPP maintenance coverage for free oil change for life. I hope they can change it for Mobil1 Synthetic for no charge.

why are you going in with 50%? Light comes on at 15%.

+1

You only need to go in when the maintenance minder alerts you. Factory fill is suppose to be in there the entire time. There are additives either added into the factory fill or part of the assembly lubricant that is suppose to be in the oil until the maintenance minder goes off.

I switched to synthetic after 10K miles.

Acura recommends you wait until your MID indicates the need for service, before changing your oil. This applies also for the 1st oil change on your car. The cars come with engine oil that has a high moly content from the factory that is useful to keep in the engine due to the various things which come with breaking in a new engine, i.e., metal shavings.

Wait until the MID indicates you need service.

^^ agree with the above posts. Rule of thumb is to leave the first factory oil fill as long as possible, then after that, you can change your oil as often as you desire. I had my first oil change at 7000 miles, then changed to Mobil1 0w-20 synthetic.

What are the benefits to switching to synthetic since Acura does not say it is required?

I agree with the others. I follow the maintenance minder on my 06 and use regular oil. I now have almost 97,000 problem free miles.

Synthetic has no natural contaminants since it is not produced from crude oil. Since it runs cleaner, there is also less sludge/build-up that robs engine performance. Sythetics also can take higher engine temp; less burn-off. Sythetic basically will help minimize friction, so better performance and will help your engine last longer.

A lot of talk is about whether the oil can last the 8K-10K mile interval between changes. What about the filters? Are today's filters capable of doing the job required when you go that long between oil changes?

My TSX has <2K but for my other cars, I change (using natural oil) every 5k. I'd like to use synthetic in the TSX for the first oil change. I see that FRAM has some higher end filters. Do they make a difference or are the standard filters of today more than capable of doing their job for 10K miles?

If you're "going long" with your oil changes (my guess is 7k and up), get a high quality oil filter that you can get your hands on. Lower quality oil filters do not have as much filter elements, and they are cardboard based so they won't last that long, and in some cases even leak dirty oil back into your engine.

Personally I have been using HAMP oil filter, I gave up on the Honda "filtechs" since they are cardboard based. I heard Mobil1 and Purolator PureONE are good oil filters to try. Good oil filters cost around 9-10 bucks. For a part that's gonna last 10k and filters the lifeblood of your engine, I would not skimp on a good oil filter.
