Navigation DVD Player Error

Hello everyone,

The navigation system for my 2004 TSX has stopped working and the car is no longer under warranty. All of a sudden it just started saying "please check disk" and now whenever I start the car it says "Now Downloading Software..." and then 2 minutes later says "Please check disk". I have tried cleaning the disk repeatedly and carefully and it is flawless. My computer can also read the files on the disk just fine, leading me to think there is something really wrong with the DVD player unit.

I called the dealership and the DVD player runs for 4 grand! That is twice the 2k I shelled out originally for the whole system. I called Acura client services and they were not helpful in the least, just referring me back to the dealer. I really don't want to take my car to the dealer and pay them $100 to stick a different disk in and tell me what I already know that I need a new one, because when I called they said they don't fix the player, just diagnose the problem. I may resort to finding one on ebay, which I could probably snag for several hundred dollars (still sucks) but it may have been stolen/ not come with the security code to activate it.

It sucks especially for me as a young college-aged male because neither the dealership or acura client services takes me seriously. This is like the 7th major problem I've had with this car too since purchasing it new and babying it. If anyone has any advice about how to go about manually fixing the player (I am good with electronics) or where I could take it to get fixed or any other bit of information that would be helpful, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Bryan.

snailspeed 12-11-2007 11:32 PM

If your disc is fine, maybe you could try to get a dvd player on eBay, they are cheaper than the dealer. I think the system is interchangeable with a few models like Accord or something (don't quote me on this), search someone has changed to an 06 Accord player and it worked, plus you would get the updated GUI. Good luck.

poltergeist 12-11-2007 11:55 PM

You can send the unit back to Alpine directly and have it reconditioned. Do a search, as someone on here contacted Alpine and got that info.

Thread here https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40643

Same thing happened to my 2005 when it was 3 weeks old. It wasn't the disk but the entire DVD unit. I was out of state when it happened. Stopped by an Acura dealer, they popped in a new DVD...same issue. I had to drive cross country with a broken Nav. Really pissed me off being my first Japanese car.

BW61885 12-12-2007 11:38 AM

I'm going to try sending it to alpine in CA for $158 per the phone number I got from the thread poltergeist linked me to. Thanks so much for the help, I'll keep you posted with how it turns out.

BW61885 12-27-2007 10:31 PM

Installed the fixed navi system sent back from Alpine today and it works great. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions. The number for Alpine is 800-421-2284 for anyone that needs to have their navigation dvd unit replaced. Thanks again!

poltergeist 12-27-2007 11:26 PM

Good news!!! Glad to hear it worked out.

Flounder 01-16-2008 01:26 AM

Bryan, which unit did you send to Alpine, the one in the trunk holding the DVD?

what was Alpine's turn around time on repairing your unit?

mav3556 01-26-2008 03:39 AM

do you think Alpine sells used or refurbished TSX 06 navigation drives?

I don't own a TSX, but a 04' Acura MDX.

Two days ago, I started getting the following error on my NAV screen "DVD Disc Reading Error - Consult Your Dealer". I've taken the disk out and made sure it was clean and reinserted. The error seems to be intermittent but often. Do you think it's the DVD player or is it the disk?

Thanks in advance!

reds2k1 07-18-2008 12:14 PM

Anyone knows if the laser of the DVD player can be cleaned using a laser lens disc (the one used for cd/dvd player)?

npolite 07-18-2008 01:12 PM

It is absurd that car manufactures are still using DVDs. They should change these to flash memory readers. A 8GB SD card doesn't cost more than $50 and then you could stick it into you computer to run updates against it. No moving parts and less likely to have something break. And even if it does, it would be cheap to replace.

nelsond003 07-30-2008 03:08 PM

mine '05 TSX had the same problem, my dealership replaced my DVD unit under my extended warranty, but my disk is sooo scratched up, that i now have to find a replacement. They wouldnt replace the disk :( I even tried to burn a copy from my Laptop using a dvd copier and the dvd+r DL. but my computer even says it cant read the disk. there is a few deep scratches in there. guess the ex didnt want me to have navi! Looking for a Orange 3.4c version disk or newer???? Any help would be great.

only4me2know 07-12-2010 08:54 AM

I have a 2007 TSX with 53k miles. I just received the "DVD Disc reading error please consult your dealer". And so I did. Inskip Acura in RI indicated that the NAV is no longer under warranty (4yr/50k miles) nor does the extended warranty cover the issue. Absolutely ridiculous. I made an appointment for regular service...we'll see what they charge to fix this. Definately not a happy Acura owner right now. I will be calling/writing Acura directly on this.

UPDATE: Inskip Acura of Rhode Island kept my car overnight to address the NavI issue. The best part is that my service advisor "Mark" was able to get this covered under warranty . Basically, a part failed within the DVD unit thus scratching the disc. Two parts were ordered: 39540-SEC-A04RM (NAVI ECU) & 39010-SHJ-A01 (NAV DISC). My NAVI is again fully operational - Once again a happy Acura owner!

The original person I spoke to in order to make the appt was, unfortunately, not privvy to the fact of what would be covered. I am under the impression that she is part of Inskip's call center...not that of Inskip Acura directly.

Sumner Collins 08-01-2010 08:33 PM

I had the same error on my 04, pulled the DVD unit and sent it to alpine (makers of the unit). they charge a $158 flat fix fee, which is far cheaper than a new unit. Got it back a week ago and works perfectly.

thatflyingpan 08-26-2010 12:29 PM

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue. I accidentally made a similar thread earlier this month w/out searching :tomato:. So, I took my car to the dealer and they tried a newer dvd, but got same error. They concluded that the laser in the dvd drive is broken and quoted me $530 for them to send it back to Acura in CA and get it fixed.

I'm most likely going to call Alpine directly to ship it myself. Would it possible to just replace the lens/laser myself for cheaper (has any1 done this)? Also, did you guys just disconnect/ unscrew the player in the trunk and mail just that part?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Tahoe4wd 10-07-2010 05:31 PM

You just unscrew and disconnect the DVD / Navi and send it Alpine in Torrance Calif.

I had the same problem with my 2001MDX. Sent to Alpine, they returned unrepaired because they no longer stock parts for the 2001-2003 units!! They also returned my check so I'm only out shipping and insurance. IT sucks!

PS, I'm on the MDX forum so I might not find this thread again. Found it through Google search.

aint that the truth

Master47 01-12-2011 10:35 PM

My 2005 TSX has this same message coming up for the DVD disk reading error. I removed the DVD player from the trunk, and plan to send it off tomorrow. It amazes me that the $158 is still the same repair price, considering there are posts above from 2007 quoting the same price, but that's what the customer service person confirmed for me yesterday when I called. I hope they still stock 2005 parts...:wish:

UPDATE: My navi DVD player was returned to me on 1/27, about 2 weeks after shipping it to Alpine. It came back fixed, with a work order stating they had replaced the laser assembly, and a few other parts. Installed it today, and its as good as new.

Stevestr 03-28-2011 02:37 PM

Sorry to rehash but just to confirm/update:

Called Alpine

They stated that they cannot guarantee ahead of time if replacement parts are available but the offer still stands:

1) Check or Money Order (he did not mention them taking Credit Cards) for $158 to Alpine Electronics

2) Return the unit to:

ALPINE ELECTRONICS OF AMERICA
2012 ABALONE AVE UNIT D
TORRANCE CA 90501

3) Include contact info, phone #, and brief description of problem

4) INCLUDE NAVI DISC

I sent it off today. Shipped through UPS Store and let them pack it. Shipping is $11.65 for Ground. Packing was $5.79 before AAA Discount.

My location offers 5% off for the shipping and 15% off for the packing materials with AAA card. My total was $16.27.

Alpine said 5-7 day for repairs. I'm thinking 2 weeks round trip. I have a 2004 TSX but my Navi box was stamped 3-2003 so I am crossing fingers that they still have repair parts! :wish:

Thanks to whoever found this information first. I did call the 888-628-4357 (M-F 7-5 PST) number and he confirmed the above information.

Just for reference purposes since this was posted in '08:

I tried the cleaner on mine and it really didn't help at all. I've had a dirty lense before but now I think my issue is with a part inside the unit scratching discs. I took the DVD disc out and it had some tiny scratches on it that were not there when brand new.

You can try a disc cleaner but in my case it did not work. YMMV. :2cents:

ChrisMc73 03-31-2011 01:54 PM

Can someone share any information on how to get the Control Unit out of the trunk? I can't get to it with the trunk liner stuff there.

Also would this issue be part of the reason my radio buttons don't work perfect? Sometime s I have to hit a channel station several times to get it to change.

I don't have a TL so I'm honestly not sure about removal. In the TSX it is just suspended from the rear parcel shelf in the trunk and is easily accessible.

Radio buttons would more than likely not be affected by this because I can still use my buttons with the unit removed. Sounds like a problem with the headend but that's just my :2cents:.

ChrisMc73 03-31-2011 03:37 PM

Thanks Stevestr, I found a video on getting the Navigation Control Unit out of the trunk. I'm going to send it in and when it comes back, we'll see how the buttons react then. If they still act up, I will have to look into the PXAMG iPod integration kit I had installed.
http://peripheralelectronics.com/per...HD1_manual.pdf

It might need a firmware upgrade or something else?

Maybe, but from what I remember the map updates usually adjust the firmware if needed. Have you ever applied any map updates yet?

Successfully Repaired! Thanks Alpine!

Just a follow-up.

They did it! Alpine successfully restored my navi to even better than new condition!

Sent the box out on 3-31-11. Box was repaired on 4-4-11 and shipped back on 4-5-11.

Fee is still $158 check or money order and covered the labor to look at the unit from what my invoice showed.

Diagnosis:

01T55533Y04-RM IPF PWR UNIT BN-M30U04 Qty 1
81D61456Y01-RM DV36T02C, IPF DVD MECH Qty 1
Mechanical, Apply Countermeasure:
07-05603Z01 BKT,SPRING NUT2, ATN-A051620 Qty 1

Just do it if you are having any problems with the unit. MUCH cheaper than going through Acura themselves.

PS - I have one of the old skool gangsta TSX's from July 2003 and they were still able to repair it. My unit on the bottom was marked March 2003. I don't know about units earlier than that date.

I just sent mine off today with the same issues. However, I did not see your previous post to include the map dvd, so that is not currently in transit with everything else. I am hoping there will be no problems with not having that, as it was not stated when I called the customer service number. I purchased mine in April of '03, with the DVD drive stamped from January of '03. I am happy to have just come across your post, as I have been without my navi and all the other controls that come with for around 2 years, since I was not about to shell out the 3,000 for the new navi from Acura!

RX8 05-15-2011 04:04 PM

Thanks for the tip, guys. My '05 TSX just started getting the same DVD read error. I'm sending it off to Alpine tomorrow and crossing my fingers.

Pulling out the DVD drive is very simple. There are 4 bolts, 2 on each side of the bracket in the trunk holding it to the top that need to be removed. Then you just need to disconnect the 2 cables in the back that you can get to by folding down the seats. That is all that is needed for removal. if I recall you need a 10mm socket and wrench for the bolts.

Hi, any idea how you got the dealer to get it covered by the warranty when it originally wasn't going to be? My warranty also just ran out when I started having the "disk reading error" issue. I assume its because you had extended warranty but please let me know if you can as I have the same problem. My disk is scratched up in a circle around the edge so I assume its the DVD player scratching the disk.

Thanks

I had gone almost two years without my navigation system working. I have an 04 TSX and the navi crapped out at about 85k miles. I'm now at 102k and I searched for solutions for the system for a long time. When I stumbled across this thread I figured I've give it a shot since everyone else seemed to have success with sending the unit back to Alpine.

I'm happy to report that everything worked just as described. I send my unit at the UPS store on June 23rd. Alpine recieved it the following week and it took just over a week for them to make the repairs. I called to check on the progress after a few days and they said they were waiting on a replacement part to come in so they fix the DVD unit. Alpine shipped the unit on July 6th and I called again on the 7th to check progress. They told me the unit was repaired and had been shipped and they were able to give me the UPS tracking number.

Just got the unit back and installed and everything works perfect. I am on the verge of upgrading to an MDX and am going to private sell my TSX. I wanted to make sure the Navi was operational before I tried to sell the car but I didn't want to pay the $850 the dealership quoted me for the repairs.

If your unit is not working just follow the instructions and have it sent back to Alpine. After $158 and a couple weeks you'll have it back good as new.

sakemeister 07-13-2011 09:18 PM

Navi error

I have a 2005 TSX and all of a sudden I got the same error about "unable to read the disc and contact the dealer". After reading everyone's posting, I called Alpine and got the instructions to mail it back to them. $158 and about 2 weeks later, it came back all fixed. Just make sure you have your code ready because it will ask for it on boot-up. Be sure to send your unit to Alpine Electronics 2012 Abalone Ave #D, Torrace,Ca 90501 for Factory repairs, the other address is for aftermarket units.. So glad I ran across all this info here, otherwise I would have been at the mercy of the Dealer.

got the navi back from apline; installed and works like new!

rodleung68 09-02-2011 06:41 PM

I had the same problem too, what should I do first?
Use disc cleaner

email alpine ? then follow the step. but what if they can't fix, will I get my money back?

Also which part do I need to send it to them ,the DVD player on my truck or the navigation system ?

My car is 2004 TSX

DVD disc error.

princyrus 09-03-2011 02:41 PM

I had the error 'Please check your disc', I did what was suggested, sent the player to alpine, received back with work order details, installed today.... same problem >_<
Any suggestions?
When I first got the car ('06 TL) the screen was fully functional with A/C controls, clock settings etc... I never had a Nav disc in my unit, after the car came back from repairing tranny, got that error msg... Usually Alpine should test the unit before sending it back to me.
Any solution will be greatly appreciated!

Navigation system update

Hello I had a question inregards to updating my 2006 tsx navigation system. Is there a free software that can be downloaded? I have heard different quotes of 185-200$ for the software, and I am really trying to by pass paying.
